We're Going on a Beach Hunt

We are making a movie of our marine community trips.
We all have to make 2 slides then one person
in our group will collate them and make a movie.
We have been working on showing "sisomo",
which means sight, sound and motion.
How will we put sound into our movies?
Mrs Torrie has made her movie
but it has missing something?
What is missing?

Air Force Red Checkers

Wow! What a display!
And in the middle of Maths too.
We watched them do loop-the-loop right above our school.
We think we had the best view in town.
We really liked it when 2 of them made a big heart shape
with their "smoke".
Why are they flying everywhere?
What type of planes are they?
We "heart" you too¸ Red Checkers!

Autumnal Equinox

We have found out what the Equinox is! Today we had a special day - we went to Kaiti Beach and Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine reserve. We couldn't snorkel at the reserve but we could wade in the water and look.
It was a fabulous day - 27 degrees! The water was warm and we searched like scientists.

Deep Water Challenge

Off we went to the Olympic Pools in the middle of a southerly storm! It didn't rain but it was cold. Brrrrr! But we took up the challenge and completed all tasks. We wanted to assess if we are safe in water. The tasks were...
  • enter the dive pool safely
  • float in the dive pool with floating aids
  • get together in the huddle position - this saves warmth, energy and keeps everyone together
  • show the help position - a way of staying afloat for a long time that saves energy
  • inflate a long-sleeved shirt and use it as a floatation aid
  • step off the diving boards and enter the water safely (some of us went off the top board!)
We all had a go at everything.
Room 2 - you did well (especially on such a cold day)
Ka mau te wehi!

Trips postponed :-(

We are all sad because the weather has meant we couldn't go to Kaiti Beach on Monday and the Marine reserve on Wednesday. But we are planning to go on Friday! The weather forecast is for 26 degrees with light winds. Don't forget to wear your sunsmart bracelet!

Lunchtimes at Awapuni School

We love lunchtimes! Take this tour of our playground at lunchtime to see the neat things we do.

Learning to Snorkel

Last week we learnt how to use a snorkel and mask with Joe Palmer. We are going to Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve next week. We will snorkel in the rock pools at low tide and look at the marine life there. Joe also told us why the marine reserve has its name...it means the footstep of Rongokako.
Room 2 students have written a post on their own blogs about snorkeling...read about them there.

Gavin the Genius Gorilla

We really enjoyed Gavin the Genius Gorilla's greeting in Maori in his "Sleepy Gavin" post. Here is our reply to Gavin in Maori. This is what the children are saying...
Tena koe = hello (to one person)
Kei to pehea koe? = how are you?
Ko Britten taku ingoa = My name is Britten
Enjoy our short video...

About Our Place

Room 2 students have published a post on their blogs about the tourist attractions in Gisborne. Most of them have a photo inserted into their post as well. The photos are from Mrs McManus - she works at Awapuni School and is a keen photographer. Thanks Mrs McManus!
Mrs Torrie grew up in Tolaga Bay so her favourite spot is the Tolaga Bay Wharf. It's the longest wharf (pier) in the southern hemisphere being 660m long. It is a great place to fish, collect mussels. But the favourite thing to do is to jump off the wharf and climb up the ladder to do it again and again!
